Today I bought bird seed. Yup bird seed…. its not something I ever thought would be front and center on any of my shopping lists, Tom Ford sunnies – yip, APC shoes – yip, Barney’s trench – yip, bird seed… say what?? But there you have it one big ole bag o seed. Your welcome birdies. I am not a monster, I am friendly to god’s creatures (well some of them)… starting from now that is!
There was however a fair amount of confusion (um on my part) when the garden lady asked me “what type of bird seed do you want?” HUH there are types… I guess my face must have said it all. She walked me over to a massive contractor sized brown bag and pointed…. I was horrified, good grief how much to birds eat? they’re only little….. “what i have to buy all that”, she looked me over (again), reached in and pulled out 1 reasonable sized bag, oh well now that’s more like….. I mean they have to fly don’t they?

You’ve got many wondrous sights coming your way if you’re feeding birds. Towards the end of the month of April and the beginning of May, you may be treated to a view of rose-breasted grosbeaks, Baltimore orioles, indigo buntings, to name a few. They are not around for long, so enjoy while they are there. If you put out some grape jelly mixed with water in a feeder (ratio of 1 part jelly to 3 parts water), you’ll enjoy the Baltimore orioles longer. There are specialized feeders for that mixture. If you have any questions, just ask.
Looks like you’ve already got a nuthatch on that feeder. Patrick puts the seed in his palm and stands very still. They come and eat right out of his hand. It’s beautiful.

I hope I didn’t make you feel too bad with the bear scare comment (on your woodchuck/groudhog post). You might want to check with your neighbors though, find out if there is much black bear activity in the area. It’s worth finding out. Where I live (in western Massachusetts) all the hilltown people pack their feeders for the season in when the bears come out of hibernation.

Patrick has corrected me on the species at your feeder. Apparently it’s a black capped chickadee. I feel like such an idyat! Regarding the bears I wouldn’t worry so much. Just be cautious. Certainly no feeders on your deck. Keep them a safe distance from the house but you still want them in view so you can enjoy them. We’ve had no problems since we started taking the feeder in at dusk. I don’t know if you put food garbage out overnight. If you do then you might want to rethink that because that will surely bring them around. They’re beautiful (from a distance). You’ll eventually see one. Be calm and observe. They’re not terribly aggressive.
